Jim,
Thanks for the info and the quick response.
Sounds like a LOT of driving then to get the good conditions. Is it feasible to spend 3 or 4 weeks in one area, say South of Perth, or would we need to accept the fact that we would be travelling around every few days and therefore couldnt really book any accomodation ?
You got an email address and I can contact you direct with any specifics ? Or drop me a line at -

If there are some people coming that are newish to waves, WA is brilliant. Lancelin (1 hr north of Perth) and Geraldton (4 hrs north)both have friendly but good waves and a big lagoon in front so the jumping is great and the wave riding can be good too. There really is something for all abilities in both these places.
For real DTL there are several places such as Gnarloo (12 hrs north), Margerat River (2.5 hrs south) and Esperance (7 hrs south).
Between Lancelin and Gero, there are a whole heap of places. Apparently Green Head is really good wave riding.
There is lots of bump and jump round Perth, and also a good wave spot, but its about 3 miles out.
As for reliability of wind, if you get a good season, you could sail every day between Gero and Lancelin. If your willing to travel you would probably sail every day even in an average season. The last few years its been windy somewhere nearly every day for a good few months of the season. I probably sail on average 2 evenings a week after work and at least 1 day most weekends during the season. I could go more but I think I would get in trouble.
The best months are October, November, December and January, although I sailed right up to May this year.
There are also some really good other things to do and see.
If you do come accross, let me know and I'll show you round.

Hi folks,
Am in need of some wisdom on WA versus Cape Town for a 4 week Christmas trip and know a number of you lot have done extended periods in Oz.
So, what the low down / advice please ?
Ive been to Cape Town a couple of times and really rate it as a great sailing venue. It sgreat and has all the benefits of being a city resort but maybe Oz has a greater wilderness / adventure feeling to it ? And does Oz (eg Margarets / Esperance) have better DTL waves / more reliable conditions etc.
And is it too scary for the average UK wave sailor as one of the blokes coming is pretty new to waves so theres no point in going somewhere that we cant all get conditions to enjoy.
So, wha'dya reakon ??
Thanks a lot.
Richard.
